Rachel Carson Study and ....

I've been immersed in reading Rachel Carson and about Rachel Carson for a new BirdNote presentation that I am working on. What a totally amazing woman. Her biography by Linda Lear entitled Rachel Carson Witness for Nature is so inspiring to read. We are all so indebted to her for her expertise and ability to write so convincingly and beautifully!!

I am currently creating a musical collage of the sounds from some of her favorite bird species with which I will improvise. There are so many many to choose from!! I'm learning some of the great sounds of the east coast birds which I haven't heard in quite a while seeing as how I've been living in the great state of Washington for the past 26 years!

I've also been working on a wonderful meditation CD to help relieve Depression and Anxiety with yoga extraordinaire Robin Rothenberg. I'll let everyone know when it is available.

I'm reading a great book about the father of American oboe playing - Marcel Tabuteau written by Laila Storch. It's beautifully written and gives great insights into the history of woodwind playing in the United States and the French roots. LailaStorch was a student of Tabuteau's and kept letters, photographs and notes from her time with him. She interviewed numerous people who either worked with, studied with or heard Tabuteau. I'd love to hear stories from you about Tabuteau.

I had the privilege to study with several of his students including Richard Blair, Ernie Harrison and Grover Schiltz. I wish I had known more about him then so that I could have asked more questions. I need to find out more about Ray Still's early teachers. Please share what you know!

Nancy
